Discovering Tokyo’s Most Dynamic Shopping Street

Welcome to Ameyoko (アメ横), one of Tokyo’s most energetic and authentic shopping destinations! This bustling marketplace, stretching about 400 meters between Ueno and Okachimachi stations, offers visitors a unique glimpse into Tokyo’s post-war history while serving up an exciting blend of modern shopping experiences.

A Slice of History

Ameyoko’s story begins in the post-World War II era, when it emerged as a black market where American goods were traded – hence the “Ame” in its name, which could refer to both “America” and “ame” (candy) in Japanese. Today, while it has evolved into a legitimate shopping district, it retains much of its historic charm and bargaining culture, making it one of the few places in Japan where price negotiation is acceptable.
