Tokyo’s Most Sacred Ground

Welcome to Sensoji Temple (浅草寺), Tokyo’s oldest and most significant Buddhist temple. With its massive red lantern at the Kaminarimon (“Thunder Gate”), this iconic temple has been the heart of Tokyo’s downtown culture for over 1,300 years.

A Journey Through Time

The temple’s history dates back to 628 CE when two fishermen found a statue of Kannon (the Buddhist goddess of mercy) in the Sumida River. The temple was built in her honor, and today, millions of visitors walk through the bustling Nakamise shopping street leading to the temple’s main hall. Along this traditional shopping arcade, you’ll find centuries-old shops selling Japanese crafts, traditional snacks, and unique souvenirs.
